Each day, numerous babies are born to mamas who intend to breastfeed. These same women are sent home from the hospital with a "welcome" bag full of formula with a tag on it that reads, "For breastfeeding moms." It is our contention that these bags do not help or encourage breastfeeding mothers at all, and new research stands to support this. There are alternatives to these bags that send a positive message about breastfeeding and include information and products that truly support breastfeeding. Serving Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Loris, The Horry County Breastfeeding Bag Project is a grassroots organization striving to provide a true "welcome to breastfeeding" bag to mamas who have just given birth and who intend to breastfeed. The bags include educational material, samples, and coupons that truly help breastfeeding mothers. |
